Herland Retreats

What are the Retreats all about?

Herland Retreats are held twice a year – one in the Spring and one in the Fall – at a State Park. The Retreats are Herland’s only “womyn only” event held throughout the year. It is a place for women to feel safe and comfortable being in a womyn’s space.

The retreats are held at the state park group camps, separated from the rest of the park by a gate. There are usually about 10 cabins that hold about 12 people each. There are bunk beds with thin mattresses (bring sheets) in the cabins. Most of the camps have cabins with heat and air. You may also pitch a tent under a tree in the group camp area. There are group bathrooms and showers in a building near the center of the group camp. There is a main dining hall where community meals are shared and many activities are held.

Plan on having a fun and relaxing time at the Herland Retreat. You will meet lots of wonderful womyn and are sure to make a new friend or two while you are here.

What to Bring

Bedroll, toiletries, flashlight, cards, games, sports equipment, a musical instrument for the open mic, something for the Saturday evening potluck, an item (new or used) for the Sunday morning raffle.

What to expect

Sign up for a cabin when you arrive. The signup sheets tell you which activities are allowed or not allowed in each cabin (e.g., smoking, drinking, dogs, children, partying late). Please sign up also for one shift of kitchen duty while you are at the retreat. This means helping wash dishes and clean the kitchen after one meal. Everyone that stays in a cabin is responsible for Sunday morning cleanup and sweeping of their cabin. We must be completely out of the park by noon on Sunday so we ask folks to have their cabins cleaned up by 10 am and then help us clean up the bathrooms, showers and main dining hall.

The main dining hall is in a separate building. There is a kitchen with stoves and ovens if you want to cook or heat something up for the Potluck Dinner on Saturday. There are also refrigerators and freezers in the kitchen for storing perishables. Herland has pop, water, snacks, chips, and fruit for sale all weekend. We also bring an assortment of new/used books, CDs, and other merchandise that is for sale over the weekend.

The Retreats are Herland’s only “womyn only” event held throughout the year. It is a place for women to feel safe and comfortable being in a womyn’s space. In keeping with that, we ask that you do not bring male children over the age of 10 to the retreat.

Pets are allowed but must remain on a leash at all times and are not allowed in the main dining hall (health regulations). Please don’t bring your dog if it will be unhappy (and crying) on a leash all weekend. Also, you must sign a waiver stating that you are responsible for any damage or injuries your dog may inflict on another.
