iris “unplugged” for the first time at the herland spring retreat

campfireThe popular OKC band, IRIS, will perform their first acoustic concert ever at Herland’s Spring Retreat.  Many of you know IRIS as a rockin’, hoppin’, high-energy band.  They promise to still play lots of crowd-pleasing favorites—just at a few decibels lower than we normally hear them!
Get away for a great spring weekend and enjoy peace, quiet, and nature at Roman Nose State Park, near Watonga.  The retreat will be Friday through Sunday, May 18-20th.  We’ll be at the Group Camp where A-frame cabins can  accommodate up to a dozen women each.  (You can also tent camp or bring an RV if you prefer.) Bring a bedroll and toiletries.  Dogs are welcome as long as they can agreeably stay on a leash all weekend and not come in the dining hall.
We provide most meals —Friday evening pot-o-soup, Saturday and Sunday breakfast.  For lunch on Saturday there is usually leftover soup.   Saturday evening is the grand potluck dinner where you bring your favorite dish  to wow your friends.  Herland has lots of drinks and snacks available all weekend for a small donation or you can bring your own.
During the day,  we’ll be relaxing, playing games, hiking, fishing, and holding workshops.  Friday and Saturday night we sit around the campfire, singing songs, and telling tales.  The IRIS concert will be Saturday evening about 8 pm.  You can drive up for the concert only (for only  $10) if time is limited.
Don’t wait till the last minute—send in your registration form today and get ready for some fun!

herland fall retreat at eufaula

You won’t want to miss the Herland Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula State Park on Fri., Sat., and Sun., October 27-29.  Come for as much or as little of the weekend as you like or are able.  Lake Eufaula is a beautiful location and there should be a nip of fall in the air.

Friday we arrive and set up camp.  A pot-o-something (soup, chili, etc.) is prepared for the evening meal.  Then we head down to the campfire.

We will have the popular pumpkin-carving contest (please bring your own pumpkin) and the Halloween costume contest on Saturday as well as several crafts workshops.

Bring an instrument if you are a performer for the open mic on Saturday afternoon.  Also, there are plenty of good hiking or mountain biking areas around Lake Eufaula State Park.

Saturday evening is our shared potluck meal so bring your favorite dish to wow your fellow retreaters.

For our Saturday evening concert, Herland presents Ochi.  Ochi has been known throughout Denver and surrounding areas as a preformer, teacher, drummer, and guardian of culture/history.  Hers is a new, same gender loving music for those tiredof living in a “straight jacket”.  Grab ya girl, go meet a girl, and get ready for some GIRL to GIRL love for the lesbian in you.

Using humor, relevant topics and good music she hopes to spread her message of love, harmony, and peace.  Hold on to your bonnet.  Her lyrics are sexy, even steamy but never vulgar.  They are humorous but never obscene.  Her wit is clever but never lame.

Sunday mornings are when we pack up our stuff, clean up the cabins, and have our always-fun raffle drawing.  If you wish to bring an item to donate for the raffle, it is always appreciated.

Retreat registration form and map to Lake Eufaula State PArk are on page 2.  If you have any questions about the retreat, please call Laura, Herland camp director, at (405) 602-1538 or leave a message at Herland (405) 521-9696.

General Retreat Info:  The retreat starts 5 pm Friday evening and continues to Sunday at noon.  We provide the Friday evening meal, Saturday breakfast and Sunday breakfast.  Saturday lunch is usually leftovers from Friday’s supper and Saturday breakfast or you may bring something.  The Saturday evening meal is a potluck and the kitchen is available if you need to bake or prepare your dish.  There are large refrigerators and freezers to store your potluck items or personal food.  Herland has pop, water, and snacks for sale all weekend (50 cents each).  Accommodations are at the Group Camp.  The cabins have mattresses but you need to bring a bedroll (or sheets and blanket) and a pillow.  Bring toiletries and a towel for your own use in the (group) bathrooms. Visit our website for more details.

ochi at herland fall retreat

Get ready to hear some great music on Saturday, October 28, at the Herland Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula (more details in next month’s Voice).

THIS IS MUSIC OUR WAY!! This is a new, same gender loving music for those tired of living in a “STRAIGHT JACKET”. Grab ya girl, go meet a girl, and get ready for some GIRL to GIRL love for the lesbian in you.

Ochi is a proud but often bored transplant residing in Colorado. She moved to Colorado at the age of 10 with her family when they relocated from Chicago to start a church in 1970. For Ochi growing up in the church meant more than just religious teaching. In fact because she was in the ministerial family she had to work in all areas of the church. The bottom line, a church is a business where she learned about accounting, business management, volunteer recruitment, dedication, sacrifice, entrepreneurship, advertising & marketing, community service, and entertainment. Each valuable lesson has served her well. Ochi left the church but not the lessons and skills she acquired along the way.

Ochi is an activist and trailblazer from the crown of her head to the soles of her feet. She briefly served on the board for NCBLG and the Gay and Lesbian Center of Colorado. Over the years she has begun several community organizations and clubs in Denver. Her goal has been to aid struggling businesses of color that were unable to access the needed financing that would create a more professional and marketable establishment. During the 80’s she also began a youth program that matched at risk youth with seniors in need of a helping hand. She has worked on several community programs dedicated to cleaning up distressed areas making a cleaner, safer environment for the elderly and youth. Since 1998, Ochi has been known throughout Denver and surrounding areas as a teacher, drummer, guardian of culture/history, and an “A #1″ volunteer. From cleaning carpets and painting at a shelter for battered women to rescuing injured animal and feeding the homeless, Ochi is there.

Her latest passion has been to create music her children can enjoy. “Let’s face it, music has gone downhill and that’s not just an opinion, it’s a fact. Lyrical crime is at an all time high. Wimmin are degraded, humiliated, and gang raped to a catchy beat. Those whose only interest is turning a profit assault our ears and subconscious on a daily basis. WHERE IS THE LOVE, PEOPLE!??!” Ochi has launched her very own, one woman campaign called, “TAKE BACK THE MUSIC!” Using humor, relevant topics and good music she hopes to spread her message of love, harmony, and peace. She is working to prove that profanity, vulgarity, homophobia and sexism aren’t necessary for music sales. Hold on to your bonnet. Her lyrics are sexy, even steamy but never vulgar. They are humorous but never obscene. Her wit is clever but never lame.

Ochi’s production company, Gatekeeper Productions, was borne out of frustration over limited access to the music industry. Formulated to meet the needs of same gender loving artist who refused to conform to be heard, Gatekeeper specializes in non-offensive, sexy music that reaffirms supports and validates wimmin who love wimmin. Its goal is to encourage, entertain, and enlighten all people and especially same gender loving people through music.

Ochi has shared in joyous performances with Irepo Afrikan Dancers & Drummers, Baba Joda, the Watoto Afrikan Dancers & Drummers, Carmelia Van Horn, Carmen Toure’, Moyo Nguvo, Jambalaya, Afia Walking Tree and many more. She has collaborated with: Heritage Dancers, Denver School of the Arts, the African American Leadership Institute, the Institute of Global Scholarship, the Denver Kwanzaa Committee, the Denver Black Arts Festival, Take Back the Night, the Denver Pan African Film Festival, and so many wonderful others.

make plans for fun! herland spring retreat

Plans are really shaping up for Herland’s Spring Retreat to be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 19-21, at Roman Nose State Park.  Bring your dog and plan on entering Fido in the doggie contests—like Best Tail Wag, Best Kiss, Best Trick, etc.  We’ll also be decorating kites and giving a prize for the best-looking and best-flying kites.  Other activities planned include little red wagon races, open mic, and game tournaments.
Entertainment on Saturday evening will be provided by Mary Reynolds and her band.  A talented songwriter, classically trained vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, Mary can call upon an eclectic repertoire of traditional material and American popular songs. Mary’s first solo CD, “Patience” was released in April 1998 to great enthusiasm from audiences and public radio, appearing on several “Recommended” and “Best of the Year” lists. Mary lives in Oklahoma City, where she continues to play with the jazz band Miss Brown to You and the vocal group The Sisters of Swing, along with other projects in traditional, country, jazz & pop music.
The retreat starts 5 pm Friday evening and continues to Sunday at noon.  We provide most meals but bring something for the Saturday evening potluck. See the registration form on page 3 and visit our website for more details.
