Herland Spring Retreat

Save This Date!  May 16th – 18th, 2008

Are you ready for a weekend full of relaxation, good friends, good music, good food, and lots of fun?  Well you’re in luck!  The annual Herland Spring Retreat will be at Roman Nose State Park (near Watonga), Friday, May 16 to Sunday, May 18.
For those of you that have never been to a Herland retreat, now is the time to give it a try!  Whether you come solo or with friends, are a certified camper or city grrrl, or come from near or far, it’s a perfect, affordable opportunity to meet new friends, catch up with old friends, play board games and sports, explore nature, learn something new at a workshop, or simply relax in an incredibly supportive environment.  On Saturday, you may want to strut your stuff at the open mic, make something yummy to share for the potluck dinner, and then relax while you enjoy the Saturday night concert.  After the concert, there is always singing and story telling around the campfire, and this only gives a glimpse into what all there is to do.  The Herland Retreat is whatever we make it.  Let’s make it great!
If you have a hobby you’d like to share with other awesome women, or have an idea for a workshop, email Sannie at SAHatwork@aol.com and we’ll get it planned.  Be creative with this – anything goes!  There will be more information and a registration form in next month’s Voice.

nancy scott at herland fall retreat

nancyscottDon’t miss out on Herland’s Fall Retreat on Halloween weekend, Oct. 26—28, at Eufaula State Park.  Fall foliage should be in full bloom and this will be a great time of year to be out in nature and enjoy the companionship of the Herland community.
Our featured performer for the Saturday night concert will be Nancy Scott, live from Austin, Texas.  Nancy has been performing for over 20 years around Texas,  Oklahoma, North Carolina, California and other states. Her songwriting style varies from folk to blues blended with a touch of country and rock. She was one of the top ten songwriters in the Austin Music Umbrella Songwriter’s Contest in 1983 and won honorable mention for two of her songs in the 1990 Billboard Songwriters contest. Serious warmth, as well as insightful humor, characterize her songs.  Nancy has an unusually interesting voice, a relaxed, humorous stage presence, and a collection of tunes that many a popular, big name artist would give their eye teeth to own.
We have lots of special activities planned for this retreat, including a pumpkin carving contest (bring your own pumpkin), a Halloween costume contest for people and dogs.  Friday night we’ll have a casual supper and then sit around the campfire and tell stories and sing songs.  Saturday breakfast is provided.  Activities during the day on Saturday will include tie-dyeing and outdoor and indoor games.  (Be sure and bring natural fibers, cotton or silk, for best results  tie-dyeing.)  Saturday night is the famous potluck (always the best meal of the year) followed by the concert.  Sunday will feature brunch and the raffle.
The retreats are held at state park group camps, separated from the rest of the park by a gate.  There are about 10 cabins with bunk beds or you may also pitch a tent.  Signup sheets for the cabins will tell you the type of activities allowed or not allowed in each cabin (e.g., smoking, drinking, dogs, children, partying late).  The Retreats are Herland’s only “womyn only” event held throughout the year.  It is a place for women to feel safe and comfortable being in a womyn’s space.  Pets are allowed but must remain on a leash at all times and are not allowed in the main dining hall (health regulations).
If you have any questions, please call Laura at 602-1538.

come play at the herland fall retreat

It’s that time of year again!  Time for a quick getaway to womyn and nature.  Don’t miss this opportunity to relax, hike, read a book, tie-dye a T-shirt, bird watch, ride a bike, fish, play games, listen to live music, or play your new song at the open mic.  Coming up on Halloween weekend in October, Herland will have its Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula State Park.
We’ve always had great weather at Eufaula in the fall and we don’t expect this year to be any different.  Since it is Halloween weekend, consider bringing a costume (for you and any four-legged friend you might bring) and enter the Saturday evening costume contest.  Another contest will feature pumpkin carving (please bring one if you can).  Last year’s entries in both contests were great!  Look for more details and a registration form in next month’s Voice.

iris “unplugged” for the first time at the herland spring retreat

campfireThe popular OKC band, IRIS, will perform their first acoustic concert ever at Herland’s Spring Retreat.  Many of you know IRIS as a rockin’, hoppin’, high-energy band.  They promise to still play lots of crowd-pleasing favorites—just at a few decibels lower than we normally hear them!
Get away for a great spring weekend and enjoy peace, quiet, and nature at Roman Nose State Park, near Watonga.  The retreat will be Friday through Sunday, May 18-20th.  We’ll be at the Group Camp where A-frame cabins can  accommodate up to a dozen women each.  (You can also tent camp or bring an RV if you prefer.) Bring a bedroll and toiletries.  Dogs are welcome as long as they can agreeably stay on a leash all weekend and not come in the dining hall.
We provide most meals —Friday evening pot-o-soup, Saturday and Sunday breakfast.  For lunch on Saturday there is usually leftover soup.   Saturday evening is the grand potluck dinner where you bring your favorite dish  to wow your friends.  Herland has lots of drinks and snacks available all weekend for a small donation or you can bring your own.
During the day,  we’ll be relaxing, playing games, hiking, fishing, and holding workshops.  Friday and Saturday night we sit around the campfire, singing songs, and telling tales.  The IRIS concert will be Saturday evening about 8 pm.  You can drive up for the concert only (for only  $10) if time is limited.
Don’t wait till the last minute—send in your registration form today and get ready for some fun!
