SuZ Ogden to be Featured at December Herland Winter Coffeehouse

Sorry for the late notice.  We are having problems with the heat at Herland so we’ve decided to reschedule tonight’s coffeehouse for January.  If you’re looking for something to do this evening check out Peggy Johnson at the Red Cup or the Sister’s of Swing at St John’s Episcopal church

suzogden.jpgThe Herland Winter Coffeehouse Series got off to a great start in November with our evening of poetry by the group Calyx.  Now we would like to switch gears and invite you for an evening of musical inspiration with SuZ Ogden at 7 pm on Saturday, December 15, 2007.  This event is free, but all donations are greatly appreciated.
In her celebration of Life, SuZ travels the world sharing her gift as a vivacious speaker/singer/songwriter whose spirit weaves through her message and her music.  Her experience with blues, folk, country, gospel, and honky-tonk music has evolved to create a sound she calls “Angeltonk”.  Live or recorded, SuZ’s music is inspirational, moving, and top-notch. She has been featured on both radio and television throughout the United States as well as in Moscow, Russia and Kiev, Ukraine. Her travels illustrate how music is truly the web for Peace on Earth because “there are only seven notes and twelve sounds, and they translate the same in  every language.
The Reverend Dr. SuZ Ogden has worked with such notables as Deepak Chopra, Mark Victor Hansen, Marianne Williamson, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Barbara DeAngelis, John Grey, as well as others known for their work for enlightenment. SuZ currently works in covenant with the Reverends Lloyd Strom, Marjory Dawson, Catherine Pena, Michael Cole, and Dr. Marcia Sutton creating music to serve ministers and teachers of spiritual practices. This music and these practices can be found at http://www.sacreddays.org/.
Now serving as Minister of Music for United Life Church in Oklahoma City, SuZ resides with her partner Reverend Shelley Heller (Senior Minister) and their dog Buster. Traveling from the heart of the country, SuZ continues to be an inspiration for life, love, and the pursuit of happiness in the many lives she touches as a consultant, speaker, singer, and storyteller.

House Passes ENDA Legislation

By a vote of 235-184, the House of Representatives voted on November 7 to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA, H.R. 3685).  The vote was largely along party lines but 25 Democrats voted against ENDA and 35 Republicans voted for it.  When the vote was taken, the Democrats cheered loudly.  It is possible that ENDA will now be quickly sent to the Senate for a vote.  President Bush has threatened a veto of ENDA.
Traditional Values Coalition Chairman Louis P. Sheldon called ENDA a “a spiritual war between the First Amendment rights of Christians and the homosexual agenda that is determined to eliminate the most significant opposition to their agenda–which is Christianity.”

Brouhaha Brewing in One Maryland County

Opposition to trans-inclusive legislation in Montgomery County, Maryland is heating up.  The legislation passed in November amends the County Code and sections of County law to “prohibit discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations, cable television service and taxicab service on the basis of gender identity.”
Montgomery County is situated just north of Washington, D.C. and Southwest of Baltimore and is one of the most affluent counties in the nation. Most of the county’s residents live in unincorporated locales, the most populous of which is Silver Spring.
Thirteen states have laws prohibiting discrimination based on “gender identity or expression” in employment, another half-dozen—including Maryland—have legislation pending and almost 100 cities have ordinances on the subject.
A group of conservative citizens, upset about the legislation, scheduled a protest at a swimming pool to highlight its concern that the legislation is, in reality, a plan to force co-ed locker rooms on an unwilling populace, which would endanger women.  The measure will soon be the subject of a court challenge by a group called Advocates for Faith & Freedom.
