supper club

VelvetThe Belle Isle Brewery  has been one of our most popular Supper Club locations.  They serve everything from pizzas, to burgers, to tuna steak sandwiches, to vegetarian fare. And they do it all very well. We’ll be there on Saturday, February 10, at 6 pm for our monthly supper club. Belle Isle Brewery is located on the lower floor of 50 Penn Place, corner of NW Expressway and Pennsylvania.
After dinner, we will head back to Herland at 8 pm to watch the film, Tipping the Velvet, Part 1, the saucy and tantalizing tale of an adventurous British lesbian!  When Nan Astley discovers the exciting world of the 19th century music hall, she also meets - and falls in love with - Kitty, a popular male impersonator. They become a double act both on and off stage, but closeted Kitty soon betrays her. Devastated, Nan takes to the streets. To survive, first she wears her music hall attire and works as a “male” prostitute. Later, she is “rescued” by the capricious widow Diana, and enters a world of wealth and debauchery. Eventually, Diana throws Nan out the door, and the plucky dyke must search for her one true love.

video night

AggressivesJoin us at 7 pm on Friday, Feb. 2, as Herland presents The Aggressives.  In this supersmart documentary, six New York City women attempt to set the record straight (so to speak), speaking candidly about sexual identity and their own experiences as lesbians and as women.
Filmmaker Daniel Peddle’s scrappy and astute group portrait of a half dozen New York City butches of color is a five-year overview of their lives and loves that takes in the underground “ball” scene (a la Paris Is Burning) and explores the phenomenon of the “aggressive” identity.  Neither female-to-males nor drag kings—these wonderfully articulate women speak with charm, humor, and bold honesty about class, race, gender, and their own womanhood.
