Letter to Herland

I was born an “Okie”, grew up in Texas, and got my professional degree in veterinary medicine at Oklahoma State University. I practiced and ranched in Texas in Alpine and Waco, then retired to Colorado. Never have I had the privilege to live in a town that has such a great supportive lesbian community such as Oklahoma City.

I went to one of your retreats years ago and got teased about bringing home a “barefoot Okie” for a partner. I wasn’t so lucky, but I have enjoyed receiving your newsletter ever since then.

Congratulations on your 20th Anniversary,

Dr. J

McPride Family Picnic in McAlester Sept. 24th

unitwithpridelogo_small.jpgMcPride is hosting their first “Unite with Pride” family picnic, Saturday, September 24th at Chadick Park, 6th & Delaware, McAlester, OK, from noon to 5 pm. McPride extends an invitation to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and their allies (GLBTA) to join them for this historic event. If you support GLBTA people, they are asking you to attend the picnic festivities. Come to McAlester and let people in McAlester see what organizations and faith groups in other communities are doing to help GLBTA people.

McPride is a nonprofit organization based in McAlester, Oklahoma dedicated to serving the needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people within a fifty mile radius of the city. There is no other GLBTA resource in the area. They have been established a little over a year and seek support from other groups. The First McPride Family Picnic, entitled “Unite with Pride: McPride Uniting Families with Love and Integrity” will feature speakers, singers, games, booths of information and fun for all people – gay and straight alike. Bring your own picnic lunch and non-alcoholic drinks and come out for an afternoon of fun and heart warming experiences. (Alcoholic beverages are NOT allowed in Chadick Park.)

Living up to their mission of promoting understanding and respect for diversity and a society free of oppression and discrimination, McPride believes it is important to create an opportunity for GLBTA people to be visible and to share their pride in who they are, express the love and acceptance of their families, create an opportunity for others to meet and get to know them, and to live openly with integrity.

You have an opportunity to be involved on many levels in this great event. You can plan to attend, be a sponsoring organization/church, a supporter, an entertainer, or a volunteer. We need you to help make this picnic a success!

The 2005 “UNITE WITH PRIDE” MCPRIDE FAMILY PICNIC” will be a wonderful opportunity to help unite all people in McAlester and to allow GLBTA people the opportunity to be out with integrity. Make plans to attend the picnic. See you in McAlester! Email Karen@McPride.org or call 918-452-3184 for more information.
