For the 2004 History Lecture, Lee Badgett will draw on her recent research in Europe on same-gender marriage to make predictions about what will happen in the U.S. She will talk about why some countries give gay couples partnership or marriage rights while others don’t, and she’ll make predictions about which state will be next in the U.S. In addition, she’ll address the question on everyone’s mind here: What will happen to heterosexual marriage if same-gender couples can marry? Finally, she’ll talk about why so few gay and lesbian couples get married or register as partners in Europe and what that might mean for the U.S.
Lee Badgett is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is the author of Money, Myths and Change: The Economic Lives of Lesbians and Gay Men, and is Research Director and co-founder of the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies. Prof. Badgett has appeared on television in the US and UK and on many radio programs including NPR’s Talk of the Nation. In addition to the University of Massachusetts, she has taught at Yale and the University of Maryland.
