Fall Retreat Recap

The Fall Retreat has come and gone, and I’m already looking forward to the Spring Retreat! WOW – What a Great Weekend! The weather was perfect, many new friendships were made, and even more old ones were rekindled. We had Retreat Virgins and Retreat Veterans from all over the country! The awesome blend of women made for a really wonderful weekend.

As usual, Christa and Tammy kept our tummies happy with their culinary talents, the Potluck Dinner was wonderful, the Open Mic was well attended and with lots of fun and talent, Nancy Scott blew us all away at the Saturday evening concert and campfire, Wahru kept us on the beat, and the Bartlesville/Tulsa Latino Lovelies had us salsa dancing ‘til we dropped into our chairs around the campfire.

I want to thank every single one of you that came to the retreat. Whether you made a potluck dish, scrubbed a kitchen dish, dished out a song at the open mic or simply dished with friends around the campfire – you are appreciated and you helped to make the weekend what it was.

In addition to the retreats, Herland organizes great events all year long, and is always looking for volunteers to help make these special times happen. If you are interested, you can stop by Herland any Saturday from 1 to 5 pm, or leave a message on the Herland answering machine at (405) 521–9696, and we’ll get back with you.

Peace

Peace & Love to you all, Sannie

Raising the Roof Got Big Results!!

On October 17th Herland held a fund raiser called the Joke–Off to replace the garage roof (which leaks). About 75 fabulous, generous women attended, tipping the contestants and bribing the judges to the tune of $1,000 !! Egged on by our MC, Peggy, in rare form, jokes were told by many of our Herland regulars, as well as a couple of men who ventured in, the bartender, and a waiter. The wait staff joined in the tipping, donating about $60 to Herland!

Special thanks go out to Peggy, a superb lavendar menace; the Judges: Nancy, Teri, Jean, and Ann; posters by Ginger; meeting and greeting by Sanny and Ginger; and event idea and implementation by Jeanne. Our featured performers set the mood for laughter and tipping: Louise, Jennifer, and Betsy. Thanks to all!

Three jokesters won bags of goodies including stuffed Scoobie Doo and Nemo pets, a fish shaped yard sprinkler, and a shower radio.

The Boom staff provided a warm atmosphere, with great food by Chef Suzie, and helpful, cute, friendly wait staff. The Boom donated the room for this event, so be sure and thank them when you go there for dinner or the Ginger Lamar Show, on Saturday evenings.

Now for the business end of this: the roof! We will be taking bids for the roof during November, so please call or email us about your recommended roofers!

We would also like some feedback on this event as to whether you think this should be a yearly event, is there another format/name suggestion, etc. you can make. Thanks for making this a success!

How You Can Be More Active!!

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma want to understand if as little as 1 hour of education per week for 8 weeks will help increase participation in regular moderate physical activity among adult lesbians.

Up to 78% of adult lesbians are not sufficiently physically active. This is important because we know that physical activity decreases the onset of many diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some cancers, plus improves overall health and well–being. Very little research is being done on adult lesbians so your participation is important and beneficial to understanding how to improve the health of all lesbians.

Who can participate?

If you are a self–identified lesbian aged 21–64 years and not pregnant, please call us so we can determine if you are eligible to participate.

What will I do for the study?

·      You will volunteer for an 8–week study that includes a 1–week and a 1–month follow–up.
·      The location will be at either the Oklahoma City Downtown Library or the Houston Huffman Complex, Norman.
·      You will complete several questionnaires, wear a small, device called an accelerometer to measure physical activity for 1 week on 3 different occasions, and potentially participate in either the intervention or the control group.
·      If in the intervention group you would attend several 1–hour sessions that include information on how to overcome barriers to physical activity, as well as a 20–30 minute moderate intensity walk.
·      If in the control group, you will attend several 1–hour sessions that include general information physical activity, as well as a 20–30 minute moderate intensity walk.

What will I get for participating in the study?

If you complete the 8–week study and the 1–month follow–up and wear the accelerometer as instructed you will receive: a physical activity report, a summary report of the study results, a t–shirt, and the educational information.

In addition, you will receive a $5 gift card for each of the three times you wear the accelerometer as instructed. Even if you just begin but do not complete the study you will receive a study t–shirt.

Just Do It!!

To sign up for the study or get more information, contact Danielle Brittain or Mary Dinger with the OU Dept. of Health and Exercise Science at (405) 325–9028, or Email: ouphyactlab@ou.edu.
