Finally…The Herland Fall Retreat

Fall 2009 Retreat Registration

Lake Eufaula State Park
October 23 – 25, 2009

It’s almost time for another great retreat weekend! For this retreat, we’ll meet at Lake Eufaula State Park (formerly Fountainhead) on October 23 – 25, 2009. As usual, the weekend promises to be full of relaxation, great conversation, good friends, good music, good food, and lots of fun.

Wahru

On Saturday, Barbara “Wahru” Cleveland will lead a Drumming Workshop, with Drumming Circles popping up throughout the weekend. Even if you don’t consider yourself a drummer, check it out. Many women have been converted with their very first thump on the drum! Bring a drum if you have one (if not – no worries – we’ll have some to share) and join in the fun!

Also on Saturday, Elizabeth will lead a Hemp Jewelry Making Workshop where we’ll be making groovy bracelets, necklaces, and ankle bracelets. Bring a pillow to use as a work table if you can. She’ll provide all the other supplies, but if you have beads you’d really like to use, bring them along. We’ll also have the traditional Pumpkin Carving Contest so bring a pumpkin and tools if you have them (we’ll have some tools to share) and see if you can earn the title of Herland Pumpkin Carving Queen!

Nancy Scott

The Saturday Night Concert will feature Nancy Scott, an incredibly entertaining singer/songwriter from the Austin area. Nancy has the ability to make you laugh, and make you cry (in a good way, of course ;–). Her songs and stories come straight from the heart. Even if you can’t come for the entire weekend, try to come for the concert. She is one in a million!

Your registration fee includes lodging in a cabin (or you can tent camp if you’d like), a light dinner on Friday, scrumptious breakfast/brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings, Saturday evening Potluck Dinner (bring or plan on making a dish to wow your fellow campers), all workshops and group camp activities, and the Saturday night concert. If you have any special needs, please be sure to include them on your registration form, or call one of the numbers listed below, and we’ll make every attempt to accommodate you.

A few reminders: Start thinking about what you want to bring for the Potluck, polish up your talent to share at the Open Mic, gather an item or two to donate to the Silent Auction and/or Raffle, bring a pumpkin to carve if you’d like, and plan to have a great weekend! This is your last chance to pre–register, so if you haven’t already, please send in your registration. It is very helpful for planning and buying the food, AND you get a free raffle ticket just for pre–registering! When we receive your registration form, we will mail you a packet which has the retreat schedule, a list of items you may want to bring, additional details about the weekend, and a map to Lake Eufaula State Park. If you have any questions, you may leave a message for the Herland Camp Director – (405) 550–2312 or Herland – (405) 521–9696 and someone will call you back.

The Herland Retreat is whatever we make it. Let’s make it great!

McAffrey on Health Reform

In August, State Rep. Al McAffrey made an addition to his website: The Health Reform Information Center, which will off the most up–to–date information about health reform, and provides links to various organizations that are fighting the myths and mis–representations about this legislation.

In a recent online newsletter he quotes some shocking statistics for Oklahoma: In 2006 Oklahoma families paid an average $10,592 a year in insurance premiums. Three years later this has risen to $12,239. By 2019 the cost is projected to be $20,884. The cost of doing nothing is unacceptable, and Oklahomans cannot afford to do nothing. McAffrey hopes this educational opportunity will help to dispel the many myths about health care reform. Go to www.almcaffrey.com

Lambda Legal Continues to Fight for LGBT Rights

Lambda Legal is launching a national campaign about life and financial planning to educate LGBT people about their rights and how to protect themselves and their loved ones by creating legal documents about custody, property, healthcare and other matters.

Lambda Legal is currently representing Janice Langbehn against a Florida hospital that denied her and her children visitation rights after her partner Lisa Pond was admitted for a fatal brain aneurysm. Janice was kept from Lisa’s side for more than 8 hours even though she produced documents showing she had power of attorney.

Metro Star Online

The “Metro Star Newspaper”, Oklahoma’s only GLBT newspaper, has just launched the “Metro Star Newsletter”, an online version of GLBT news. Stories are from around the world, and from Tulsa and OKC. The newspaper is a monthly publication, and the editor, Chaz Ward, wants to make news items accessible that do not make the deadline for print, or are too long to publish. Both news sources are free.
