Get out your best Jokes, Stories and Lies…and win a prize!
This event is a takeoff from the many tale–telling events around the country, such as the Slam Poets, Story Slams, and Liars’ Contests. Some of these events are high–brow, some are low–brow, but ours hasn’t got any brows at all… that is to say, you may tell it all!
Herland is proud to announce the Joke–Off competition, to be held on October 17th at the new club on the strip, The Boom, in their beautiful theater room, in a non–smoking environment. Smoking is OK in the adjacent club. The purpose of this evening of laughter is to raise money for a new garage roof at Herland. The evening will begin at 5 pm with cocktails and chips, dinner ordered from the menu at 5:30, featuring entertainment by local musicians, and then the fun begins at 6:30 with jokes, stories, and lies. The best of each category will receive a prize at 8 pm.
Here’s how it works: register in advance or from 5–6 to tell a (that is ONE) joke, story or lie. You can register to tell three tales, one in each category. Each person will receive a number, and will tell their tale as their number is called. All categories have a 2 minute time limit, as kept by the Official Time Keeper. If you go over your time, you pay the judges $9 per minute. The five judges will decide who is the best, based on their years of experience telling jokes, stories, and yes, lies (plus monetary influences).
Contestants are encouraged to bribe the judges, MC, Official Time Keeper, Event Chairperson, Herland Board members, etc., all in the spirit of fund raising. The best of each category will be awarded a prize, though you need not be present to win (though you will need to give us a real phone number so that we can let you know you have won). If you have a great joke, story or lie to tell, but cannot make it to this event, Herland will arrange for a surrogate–teller, at a cost of $25.
The Boom has generously donated the club for this event. Chef Susie Lopez will provide chips and salsa during the cocktail hour, and we hope you will take advantage of her specials of the evening: Prime Rib, with salad and vegetable; Blue Cheese Burger and fries; and Soup & Salad. Chef Lopez will also have many vegetarian items, in a variety of price ranges. The Boom will also provide a spotlight and operator, several microphones, and their (amazing) sound system. You are also invited to stay for the Ginger Lamar Show, which begins at 10 pm that evening.
Tickets for the event are available at the door for $7 each, except for three VIP tables right in front of the stage, which will accommodate 12 people, for $13 each. The VIP seats can be reserved by calling Jeanne, the Event Chairperson, at 405–255–3658, to be closely followed by a check for the number of seats you desire. Volunteers are needed for the Joke Off committee, to register contestants, decorate the tables, and direct people to the bathroom who have wet their pants laughing. Invite your friends, and heck, invite Sally Kern…she can tell a good lie!
Are you interested in getting more involved in your community, making new friends, or simply making your life more enjoyable? Herland has the solution for you! We are looking for volunteers to help a little or a lot, in many different areas:

–– Plan our cookouts, parties, workshops, housekeeping, and fundraising events
–– Pitch in to make our bi–annual retreats the best getaway ever
–– Maintain our website and other networking pages.

Two important events take place in October: one raising awareness and money for the cure of breast cancer, and the other raising money and awareness of the AIDS virus. Both events honor those surviving with the diseases, and those who have died.
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place Saturday, October 10, with registration of teams and individuals due online by October 2. Online registrants receive a free T–shirt and packet! After the 2nd, participants can pick up a packet at the Komen Central OK Affiliate office.
Besides the 5K race, there are several other events: Massage for the Cure, on September 15; Swing for the Cure: 11th Annual Golf Tournament and Tailgate Party on September 28; and a fundraising commitment by Ford Co. to donate $20 for each test drive of a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle between now and the end of the year, up to $1 million. Test drive certificates are available at www.fordcares.com.
Register online at www.komencentralok.org. Call (405) 526–2873 or email cure@komencentralok.org. The Tulsa Race for the Cure is September 19, call (918) 744–5099 or www.komentulsa.org.
The AIDS Walk of Oklahoma City will be held at the Myriad Botanical Gardens on October 11, with at 5K run in the morning at 8:30 a.m., and a walk in the afternoon at 2 p.m. This is a festive event, celebrating the lives of people living with and those who have died from AIDS. Teams compete for the largest percentage of donations for AIDS support organizations, such as RAIN, Northern Lights Alternatives, and the Winds House/Other Options, by bringing in as many volunteers as they can for the run or walk.
Information tables circle the upper level of the Myriad Gardens, where the registration booth is also located. Last year over 600 people participated in the walk, that winds around in front of the Ford Center, Bricktown, and returns to the Gardens. Registration begins 1 ½ hours before each event. Go to www.aidswalkokc.org for more information on how to join a team!

Fall 2009 Retreat Registration
Lake Eufaula State Park
October 23 – 25, 2009
Are you ready for a weekend full of relaxation, good friends, good music, good food, and tons–o–fun? Mark your calendar and make plans now to attend The Herland Fall Retreat at Lake Eufaula State Park (formerly Fountainhead) on October 23 – 25, 2009.
Our Saturday evening concert will be performed by singer–songwriter Nancy Scott – an incredible bluesy, country, folky performer who sings from the “belly of her soul.” On Saturday, the incredible Barbara “Wahru” Cleveland will be leading a Drumming Workshop with Drumming Circles to follow throughout the weekend. If you have a drum, plan to bring it, but if not, there should be plenty to share. Check out this amazing YouTube video to see just how admired and loved Wahru is by some of her students: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEcx9Hq0HZg
Workshops are being planned as we go to press, but if you are interested in leading a workshop, discussion or seminar, please let us know ASAP by e–mailing SAHatwork@aol.com or calling (405) 550–2312 or (405) 521–9696. Be Creative!
If you have never been to a Herland Retreat, you owe it to yourself to give it a try! Whether you come solo or with friends, it’s a perfect, affordable opportunity to meet new friends, catch up with old friends, play board games and sports, explore nature, create or learn something new at a workshop, strut your stuff at the open mic, express your culinary skills at the Saturday evening Potluck, sing and tell stories around the campfire or simply relax in a supportive environment.
Your registration fee includes lodging in a cabin, a light dinner on Friday, breakfast/brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings, Saturday evening Potluck Dinner, all workshops and group camp activities, camp fires at night, and the Saturday night concert. There will be more information and another registration form in next month’s Voice, but the time between when you receive the next Voice and the registration deadline (October 17th) is close. So… do yourself a favor and register now, while you’re thinking about it! To register, just mail back the registration form with your check. After we receive your information, a few weeks before the retreat, we will mail you a packet which has the retreat schedule, a list of items you may want to bring, more details about the weekend, and a map to Lake Eufaula State Park.
